As a teacher, you probably want to spend some time relaxing in the summer months, but this does not mean you are ready to stop working altogether. What summer jobs are available for teachers? Are you resigned to flipping burgers if you want some extra income, or are there options out there that take advantage of your skills as an educator?
There are multiple seasonal jobs available for teachers. Teaching summer school is one, and most public schools offer these positions for their staff members. One benefit of teaching summer school is that it pays fairly well and does not require you to work the entire summer. Most summer school programs end a few weeks or even a month before school starts.
Working at a summer camp is another opportunity, and this works well for teachers who do not have family responsibilities. This job allows you to get to know kids on a more personal level, having fun, and providing a positive role model. One downside to working a summer camp job is that it is a high-stress job. Chances are you want something a little calming to do during the summer, so you can be refreshed for the start of the next school year.
Another interesting option for teachers is to write test passages. Since you probably already write tests in school, you know what makes a good test question. There are many curriculum developers that need help writing test questions, and you can get paid to do this. It is a relaxing job that does not require a daily interaction with kids, yet still builds on your natural abilities as an educator.
If you are single and do not have the responsibility of family at home, you may want to consider summer teaching jobs abroad. You can teach English in another country for a few weeks out of the summer. This allows you to travel, teach, and make a little money, all at the same time. Many of these programs last six to eight weeks.
As you can see, there are multiple summer jobs for teachers that take advantage of your teaching abilities. If you need the money, take some time to look around, and you will find a position that capitalizes on your talent. Just make sure that you give yourself a little bit of time to rest before September comes!
