A work at home mom is well aware of the problems associated with having children frolicking about in the workspace. If you’re working at home, part of the point is to spend more time with your children. But when you’re trying to work, those children can morph from little angels to big annoyances.
Here are some suggestions that might make everybody happy, and give you plenty of time to work on that home-based business of your dreams:
Take breaks for “work time.” For instance, when the phone rings and a client is on the other end, have a pre-set signal — such as closing the bedroom door — that indicates you are not to be disturbed. If the children violate this agreement, punish them just as if they had broken any other rule. They will soon learn that when you are on a serious business call, only a true emergency takes precedence.
Make your work phone and your work space off-limits. Don’t allow the children to take things out of your desk, scamper away with your last sheets of copier paper or get on your laptop to play games. Compromise by allowing them to set up desks of their own, complete with their own supplies.
Work around your family’s activities. If your kids want to go to the park on a beautiful summer day, take some time off and go with them! You can always work when you get back. Keeping your schedule flexible enough to allow family time is a huge part of the reason you started a home-based business in the first place. Make sure that you provide enough time for them and you will avoid resentment later.
When your kids are old enough, get them involved in the work. Even young children can be rewarded with a tiny “paycheck” if they run a household errand for you. Older kids can answer phones and take messages, print things out, and otherwise help take care of the little details. Be sure to reward them appropriately, and bask in the newfound closeness that comes from working the business together!
Work at home moms know how to juggle, and adding your family into the mix should be an enjoyable challenge. Have patience in them, and confidence in yourself. Soon the whole family will be happy you chose the stay at home route!
