Jenny Craig – What's All the Hype About?

by admin on March 9, 2009

You’ve seen the ads. “Have you called Jenny yet?” Kirstie Alley keeps asking. Well, have you? Probably not, because the ads do not share enough about the program. Just what is the Jenny Craig weight loss program? Will it work for you? Does it lead to permanent weight loss, or will you simply lose while you are on the program? These are all excellent questions that you need to ask.

Jenny Craig is not a new weight loss program. It has been on the market for around 20 years. The recent celebrity spokespeople have shed light on its existence and effectiveness. The program basically teaches the dieter to focus on portion control and good nutrition. This is accomplished through eating pre-prepared meals, called “Jenny Cuisine,” that have the right balance of nutrients and come in portion-controlled sizes.

This diet program does work. The food is chosen by nutritionalists and medical professionals for its nutritional value. Dieters supplement the pre-packaged meals with fresh produce and some low-fat dairy products that they buy on their own. Participants stay on the pre-packaged plan until they are halfway to their target weights. At that time they begin to factor in regular food. The goal is to have the dieters eating food of their own choice and still practicing the portion control that the program teaches. Even traditionally “banned” foods can be eaten, provided they are eaten in the right portions.

Exercise is also emphasized throughout the program. Dieters are advised to spend 30 minutes in active exercise at least five days a week. Being more active overall is emphasized as part of the program.

Dieters on the Jenny Craig system are assigned a personal consultant. This “coach” meets with the dieter each week either in person at a Jenny Craig Center or over the phone. The coach tries to encourage the dieter to stick with the program and provides overall support and accountability. During these meetings, weight loss is tracked, goals are discussed, and a menu plan for the upcoming week is created.

The main drawback to this program is its cost. It varies from time to time, particularly because of the various specials that the program will offer, but food itself is expensive, typically around $15 a day. This is on top of the monthly membership cost. However, the program does work, so those who need the additional help that Jenny Craig can provide as they work towards permanent weight loss should consider the program.
